Tungsten lighting, neatly organized yet homey ambience and juicy meat cuts is a perfect combo at the backdrop of Marylebone, London. Boxcar may count almost two years of operation now but it’s only this year when it made the Big Bang, expanding to a bakery and deli near by.

But first things first… as part of the farm-to-fork movement, posh pub-grub legend Barry Hirst’s Boxcar sources meat from small British farms and offers them at the sleek ceramics restaurant that dubs also as a butcher during business hours. A choice of cuts is stacked at the glass door fridge as you walk in with daily specials chalked up on the wall. But really, you can’t go wrong.

Their starters are quite tasty and filling. We had a burrata with pumpkin and pesto sauce and a generous portion of chargrilled greens – both, equally delicious. But still, the highlight art Boxcar is really the meat. We visited on a Sunday and wanted to try a classic Sunday roast (they come with beef, pork and lamb so take your pick) but rather opted for a dry-aged wagyu steak. Being a bit more adventurous we also tried their killer burger – a 45-day aged rare breed beef with beetroot relish adding a tangy sweetness, Lincolnshire cheddar and their signature house burger sauce. Wow!

As we wash down the meat bites with a rich-flavored lager, we ponder over the menu and also check out their brunch offering. If you’re into full English breakfast and love a heavy one, a weekend morning journey to Boxcar is also advisable. Otherwise, just leave this for your weekday dinner for an intimate and laid-back vibe.
